UNIFIED PRESENCE IS MADE BY THE HARMONIOUS ACTIONS OF MULTITUDES
Amis Meredith Crawford
A.K.A Amy, AMY-BUG, Bugs…
Amis is a Sculptor whose practice is based in the Southern Tier of New York State. They earned a BFA from the N.Y.S.C.C @ Alfred University in 2010 studying Glass/Metal/Light; with a concentration in Earth Science and Geology.
Since 2010, Amis has pursued a self-proclaimed “Working MFA” in Glass and Metal Industries across the country. Curbed by their social station, and inspired by a course they studied in college titled “Art as Industry” - Amis’ intention as a post-graduate was to research, through labor, the ethics of Fine Arts Manufacturing < as it relates to environmentalism and social class > through the factories that produce collected sculpture for the global art market. How does class and wealth inequality interact with said market; how does the art market interact with the environment? Since 2023- Amis has pursued further study of the art industry as it relates to Academia by accepting the role of Glass Studio Technician for the N.Y.S.C.C @ Alfred University. Amis has also made self-subsistence farming part of their civic-duty practice since 2010; they currently own and operate ‘The Green Acre’ a 1-acre homestead with their partner, Malachi. Amis is passionate about organic produce, medicinal plants, regenerative agriculture and community-based mutual aid as it relates to environmental impact & social constructs.
“During the review of my BFA thesis work, a professor asked me:
“Where do you see yourself as an Environmental Artist”?
I’ll share that my work is approached from a place of reciprocity with the land. The practice of cultivating an environment to nourish my physical body allows my thoughts to be in their freest form; as an anthropomorphic conduit in the surrounding landscape. Through physical interaction and dialog with non-human social agents, I create from the ground up.
